MCCASKILL GRANT ANNOUNCEMENT: $150,000 in federal grant money awarded to Missouri to help low-income families with home repairs

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill announced today that two Missouri organizations will receive a total of $150,000 in federal grant money through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The money is being provided through the USDA’s Rural Development funding initiative, which works to improve the economy and quality of life in rural communities by supporting and providing government loans and grants.

According to the USDA, the money was awarded through the Rural Development’s Housing Preservation Grant Program and will be used to help with repairs to single family homes for low-income applicants. Specifically:

  • The North East Community Action Corporation in Bowling Green, MO was awarded $50,000 to serve families in Lewis, Macon, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Ralls, Randolph and Shelby Counties.
  • West Central MO Community Action Agency in Appleton City, MO was awarded $100,000 to serve families in Vernon County.

McCaskill believes that federal grants and loans are a positive alternative to earmarks, which in the past have frequently had too little accountability.  Competitive merit and need based federal grants and low-interest government loans bring federal assistance to Missouri in an honest and fiscally responsible manner.
